It’s not a sight you see everyday. Mayors tried on virtual reality headsets during a recent Mayor’s Council Of Guam monthly meeting.

What exactly did they see and hear? KUAM News took a look for ourselves, heading down to the Pacific Historic Parks office in Hagatna.

We learned it’s an immersive 15 minute snapshot of World War II through the CHamoru perspective.

There are five chapters, to include a prologue on how the war came to Guam, a narrated storyline drawing on oral histories, and an epilogue on the island’s liberation.

Now with unanimous approval from the village mayors, the public can experience it for themselves in the days leading up to the 80th Liberation.

“So for them to understand why we have a carnival and why we have a parade on July 21st. This VR encompasses all of that,” said Nicole Calvo, Development And Program Manager with Pacific Historic Parks.

She says the non-profit organization has been working on the launch the past three years, which was possible through the Education Stabilization Fund.

“We knew that it would be something different, but something that students can relate to. So it’s not just the history that’s coming out of the textbooks or lectures. It’s a 360 degree experience that I'm very certain no one on the island has done. It's the first of its kind,” Calvo said.

Through the familiar medium, about 3800 high school students already got the chance to immerse themselves in an important time of the island’s history.

The goal is to reach 5000 individuals, and not just the youth as Program Coordinator Makaela Blas puts it.

“I'm excited for the manamko’ to come out and see it, to be able to watch it and react to it. We have been going out to the high schools so I already got an idea of how the youth have been able to react to it. So now I'm excited to bring it out to the public,” Blas said.

Blas added the VR experience was vetted by oral historians Påle' Eric Forbes, Dominica Tolentino, Jeff Meyers, Dr. Carlos Madrid and Dr. Anne Hattori.

It includes oral histories of WWII survivors Ralph Reyes, Rosa Roberto Carter, Carmen Artero Kasperbauer, Bishop Miguel de Olano Y Ortega, Pedro Cruz (Guam Insular Force Guardsman), Jesus Crisostomo, Jesus Barcinas, Elvina Reyes Rios, Ben Blaz, Francisco Kelly Acfalle, Jose 'Pop Tonko' Reyes, Jose Torres, and Juan Atoigue Cruz.

The Guam World War II VR experience is set to be launched at the Guam museum from July 16th to July 19th as part of the 80th Liberation festivities
