As the saying goes, “School’s out for the summer,” but for thieves targeting one Dededo campus, it resulted in an open invitation to let themselves in.
Finegayan Elementary School, a victim of repeated break-ins, found itself at the center of two just this month alone.
Staff discovered the most recent incident at around 6:30 a.m. today.
KUAM spoke to school principal, Marites Garcia after a similar predicament happened at the top of the school year
“For those of you who are the culprits doing this, I hope that you know you are actually hurting our students,” said Garcia.
The back-to-back breaches resulted in multiple stolen items meant for the students at the Home of the Flying Fish including laptops, a sound bar, blower fans, and a PA system mixer to name a few.
The suspects apparently gained entry to the school by cutting through fencing and breaking door knobs on both occasions.
It's a summertime security issue that Chief of Police Stephen Ignacio brought up.
“Most of the precinct commanders and division chiefs have been instructed months ago to make sure we have access to the schools after hours so that we can go in and let our presence be known through foot patrols,” said Ignacio.
Guam Education Board Vice-Chair, Angel Sablan also made the suggestion to tighten up campus watch
“We are more than happy–the Department of Parks and Rec are more than happy to add another component to our security–to our Park Police and make it a secure school police–we can maybe get our people to join our school system and help,” said Sablan.
Meantime, GPD confirmed an investigation on the breaks-ins is underway.
Anyone with information is asked to call Guam police or report it to Guam Crime Stoppers.
