The island's Catholic faithful rejoiced at this past weekend's news that the Archdiocese of Agana has a new leader. Archbishop-Elect Ryan Jiminez spoke this morning to island media about his plans to celebrate beliefs and the role of the church in the modern world.

He stated that among his duties are to focus on, "The continuing work of healing. And reconciliation. And bringing back trust to people. And I've always learned that when you're new in your role, whatever leadership position that is, take the time to get to know people – the staff, the deacons, that community. i see myself visiting parishes, engaging in conversations, and not making drastic changes."

He also said he'll have "an open mind and an open heart, being a student that's eager to learn not just for myself, but for the people."

He also quipped, "On the lighter side, I play tennis, and Guam has better tennis courts than Saipan."

The installation mass to welcome Archbishop Jimenez will be held on the Feast of the Assumption on Thursday, August 15.

Father Romy Convocar had been serving as apostolic administrator since the resignation of Archbishop Michael Byrnes in 2023 due to health concerns. Archbishop Byrnes had been brought to Guam following the church sex abuse scandal that rocked the community.
