Park Police present honorary badge for her determination and resiliency
It's been 28 years since Josephine Funes Wentzel has been back on Guam.
Wentzel, a former detective with the Guam Police Department, has been on island meeting family and friends and also did a book signing for a pair of books which chronicles her pursuit and capture of her daughter's killer.
Inspired and moved by her determination and resiliency, the Department of Parks and Recreation officials and Park Police asked to meet with her, it was a meeting that moved her to tears.
During the award ceremony, it was announced, “This certificate is presented to Josephine F. Wentzel on the 24 of July of 2024 as an honorary park police officer. Her resiliency, her determination in the journey of seeking justice during an unimaginable and difficult time.”
Wentzel was presented a certificate and honorary park police badge by the Department of Parks and Recreation Director and Deputy Director, Angel Sablan and Warren Pelletier and Park Police Colonel, Joey Terlaje.
Wentzel, made headlines as a tough mama bear whose persistence, endurance, and tenacity, helped track down and capture the killer of her daughter after six years on the run.
It is that determination that prompted DPR and Park Police officials to arrange the special presentation, who were so inspired by her story. Wentzel was visibly moved by the gesture.
“I’m really touched. I feel really honored. I was not expecting this at all. The fact that this was my beginnings and the world recognizes that I used to be in law enforcement here on Guam...to be honored by law enforcement for my efforts, was very touching and very meaningful for me. I really appreciate it and will never forget it,” said Wentzel.
The former detective with GPD is on Guam after 28 years. During her time here she's been sightseeing, catching up with family and friends, and Wentzel made time to meet with the GPD Chief, the Governor of Guam, media, and DPR.
“If you're watching, do not do anything out there in the parks, I'll find you,” said Wentzel.
