Italian carrier strike group makes historic visit on Guam
An historic visit on our shores as the Italian carrier strike group, consisting of the aircraft carrier Cavour and the frigate Alpino, docked at Naval Base Guam Sunday morning.
The ships of the Italian Navy's fleet came from Darwin, Australia, where they recently took part in the 'Pitch Black 2024' air exercise and are heading to Japan.
They are engaged in a strategic deployment in the Indo-Pacific region. Rear Adm. Giancarlo Ciappina, is the commander of the Italian Carrier Strike group and Capt. Milos Argenton is the commanding officer of the Cavour.
“This is the very first deployment of the Italian carrier and we are not very familiar with the area but we are here to build more cooperation with our allied partners and Guam is in a very strategic position,” said Rear Adm. Ciappina.
“We are getting all the support we need for our logistics stop in order to have everything we need before proceeding to Japan,” added Capt. Argenton.
Before arriving in Guam, the flagship Cavour and Alpino were engaged in an important interaction with USN carrier strike group-3.
