CNMI police officer Troy Anthony Taman Manahane was arrested Wednesday morning for assault with a dangerous weapon and disturbing the peace. The charges come after he allegedly used his government firearm to assault a person identified as a suspect in a domestic incident reported in the village of Susupe in January. He is currently detained at the CNMI Department of Corrections on a $10,000 bail.

CNMI Department of Public Safety Commissioner Anthony Macaranas said in a statement, “DPS would like to assure the public that we take allegations of police misconduct extremely seriously. We will ensure that due process and justice for everyone involved, including Officer Manahane, is served.”

He added, “We recognize that an arrest of an officer may be portrayed as a betrayal of the trust that our communities have placed in us. This type of allegations are unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our department."

CNMI DPS told KUAM that the officer will be placed on leave pending the case.

Manahane is set to appear in Superior Court on Oct. 21 for arraignment.
