Mangilao residents sound off on plans for new hospital in their neighborhood

A new neighbor is about to move in along Route 15 in Mangilao: A hospital for the island.

But how do residents in the area feel about the future development?

Kathleen Robinson has called Fadian Point Road home for 25 years, living close by from the 48-acre property next to Eagle's Field, the future site of the hospital.

She told KUAM she's far from excited about the increased congestion it will bring to her block.

“Personally, as a resident, I don’t like the extra traffic–but growth is also important,” said Robinson.

Robinson is also curious about plans for improved infrastructure in her area, another concern brought by other residents speaking with us.

“Right now, especially in this particular area, we do not have access to the sewer lines–we all have our own septic tank,” said Robinson.

The Governor stated Monday that the hospital's building will give residents in the area the ability to hook up to sewage. She added plans to put in structures to boost water capacity in the area are also in the works.

“It’s a benefit not just for the whole of the people of Guam for a hospital–but also the surrounding areas where we can bring in the infrastructure, and they can participate in that,” said Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero.

And while some Mangilao natives remain weary, others like Raphael Hilmi are receptive to a new hospital in their backyard.

“More hospitals, the better,” Hilmi said.

Mangilao Mayor Allan Ungacta, who is seeking re-election in the November 5th race, also welcomes a new hospital in the central village.

“It’s gonna help the people–the island in general,” said Ungacta. “It’s gonna help drastically with the infrastructure in that area.”

Groundbreaking is predicted within the next year or year and half–with hopes of completion in the next five years.
