Dictionary.com's Word of the Year has just been revealed. It took the social media world by storm back in August, as millions partook in using it.
The website just announced their top term for 2024, and its not "brat", "bedrot", or even "brainrot". It's "demure".
Demure pulled ahead of other contenders for the title like 'brat' and 'brainrot'. And all credit for its rise in popularity goes to beauty influencer Jools Lebron. In a video she posted on her TikTok account, providing a breakdown of what it truly means to be demure.
In her post, she said, "See how I do my make-up for work? Very demure, very mindful. I don't come to work with a green cut-crease. I don't look like a clown when I go to work. I don't do too much, I'm very mindful while I'm at work. See how I look very presentable? The way I go to the interview is the way I go to the job. A lot of you girls go to the interview looking like Marge Simpson and go to the job looking like Patty and Selma. Not demure."
The viral video now has over 54 million views and 5 million likes. We spoke to a few locals to get their opinions on the word of the year. Kayla P. From Yigo shared, "Yes, its all over TikTok... Very demure, very mindful, very cutesy... Like being serious about something, yeah."'
Also from Yigo, Dafne M. said, "Oh, demure...Yes...Very, demure...Very considerate...Like, classy...Like not doing too much." And and Harry Lee, "I guess doing enough, but not looking too much. Not being too extra."
Gabriel Taijeron, of Mangilao, said, "I think the word of the year is GOAT...Oh, very demure, very classy...I think it just means acting proper, how you should act, acting in the proper setting...Yes, I have. I use it a lot actually."
One thing you can take into the new year is to stay demure and stay mindful.
