Breaking Wave Theatre Company closes 2024 with Romeo and Juliet auditions and comedy show
Closing the year with entertainment, the Breaking Wave Theatre Company will be hosting auditions for a localized version of one of William Shakespeare’s most popular plays Romeo and Juliet and an improv comedy show presented by BWTC’s improv troupe, Improv N’ Chill.
Directed by Joyce Torres, BWTC’s adaptation will feature a modern verse translation by Hansol Jung.
“It’s incredibly empowering to place ourselves within these timeless narratives,” said Torres, who has gone on tour to perform Shakespeare’s works in the United States.
“With our rendition of Romeo & Juliet, I hope to capture the essence of Guåhan and showcase the richness of our diversity,” Torres added.
Kicking off BWTC’s celebration of Mes Chamoru, the show set in Guam will take place in March 2025 with parts of the script translated into Chamoru, Tagalog and Chuukese.
Set in contemporary Guam, the production reimagines Shakespeare’s iconic tale through a lens that’s uniquely ours. It is reclaiming and reshaping Western narratives to reflect the richness of our island and community.
This will be the second time that BWTC will be adapting Shakespeare to the island’s culture, the first being Much Ado About Nothing in 2022.
Auditions will take place on Dec. 5 and Dec. 6 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at BWTC HQ, 3rd Floor Tumon Sands Plaza.
Actors should prepare two contrasting 1-minute monologues from the Shakespeare canon.
Auditions are open to high school students and adults, this is an exciting opportunity for actors of all experience levels to bring this timeless story of love and conflict to life.
