The Attorney General’s Office brought their Meth Kills and Be Smart, Don’t Start campaigns to the Home of the Titans on Tuesday.

“I’m here to save you guys,” Michael Salas told high school students at Tiyan High School.

Salas, who is recovering from meth addiction, spoke those sobering words as part of the AG’s Office’s efforts to educate and protect students and children from meth dealers who are targeting them for their new ‘customers.’

Students also heard from Executive Director Brian Hahn with TOGHE, the island’s only peer-run recovery community.

The AG’s team spent over an hour educating students on legal topics ranging from school violence to Guam’s mandatory reporting laws. Students filling the school gymnasium engaged with experts to understand legal concepts including criminal laws, juvenile statutes, and victims’ rights.

“Our question and answer exchange informed the kids about how to protect themselves,
protecting their friends and reporting conditions which threaten their success in their
formative high school years,” stated a press release from the AG’s Office.

This outreach marks the third school visit targeting high school and middle school students.

“We are trying to change the DNA of our kids to identify, understand and to fight back against illegal activity. The concept to RESPECT authority, each other, and oneself marked the speakers and staff,” the AG’s Office noted. “We thank Principal Sophia Duenas, Acting Principal Jonalyn Ceria and Assistant Principal Joel Punzalan for hosting this important student gathering.”
