Public school students will not have classes on Monday, Dec. 9.

The Guam Department of Education announced it would close schools and its central office in Tiyan as part of the local tradition of honoring Santa Marian Kamalen.

Officials said this closure is in recognition of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on Sunday, Dec. 8, a significant event marked by a procession in Hagåtña, reflecting the community's deep cultural and religious roots.

“The veneration of Santa Marian Kamalen, symbolized by the centuries-old statue, underscores the importance of heritage and tradition in Guam,” GDOE spokesperson Tes Reyes-Burrier stated in a news release. “As the island celebrates this revered patron saint, GDOE ensures that the observance of this holiday is respected, and educational activities will continue after the commemoration.

Masses and the procession will be held Monday in Hagatna.

GDOE operations will continue on Tuesday, Dec. 10.
