Blood splatter is all the evidence that's left in the driveway of this home along Alegata Street in Dededo.

It's here that a man was forced to pull out his gun early Monday morning to stop an intruder.

The homeowner decided to protect his family including the children inside after another man was caught on the property apparently trying to rob their home.

The would-be robber suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The homeowner suffered an injury to his eye during the encounter.

Guam Police Spokesperson Officer Berlyn Savella said officers with Dededo Precinct got the call of a shooting just after 3 a.m.

The suspect was taken to the Guam Regional Medical City where he was pronounced dead.

The victim was treated and released from the Guam Memorial Hospital.

The family declined to speak with KUAM about the incident but this apparently is just one of many more that Dededo Neighborhood Watch's Omar Baldemor said they've been alerted to.

“There have been recent reports especially in the Macheche area as well as Alegeta Road regarding these recent activities. There’s a whole lot of factors that can be assumed or are reported by authorities and social media. As residents of the neighborhood watch, we do our best on our end as well as the police department. As for external factors on why these crime rates are going up, I can only assume it’s because we are in the post pandemic era that people are getting comfortable, which could be another factor in that,” said Baldemor.

It's why the neighborhood watch group has been doing its part to look out for the community.

“We do keep to the vigilance that we have always discussed in the past. If you see it, report it. Because safety always comes first in this situation and in this circumstance,” said Baldemor.

“I think that us as residents should be more acute to everything that’s around us and keep abreast of what has been going on and what is happening and why people are doing it, whether it’s under the influence of any substances or not. But for me I believe safety is our priority as a resident…the protection of my family is number one,” he added.

The early morning shooting was the first reported on Guam since the expanded Castle Doctrine proposal lapsed into law earlier this year.

The Castle Doctrine allows a homeowner to use deadly force to protect themselves against intruders. The updated law now includes the curtilage of a home including car ports and outdoor kitchens.

“At the end of the day it’s your family on the line and I believe that when it comes down to your family there are certain factors that go out the window and the rationality of it all turns to take a balancing scale,” he added.

Meantime, GPD’s Criminal Investigation Section is leading the investigation.

The suspect who was killed during the attempted robbery has not yet been identified.
