First wave of Marines relocate to Guam from Okinawa
A detachment of approximately 100 logistics support Marines from the III Marine Expeditionary Force have begun relocating from Okinawa to Guam, marking the first phase of a broader realignment effort.
This move follows the Joint Statement of the Security Consultative Committee issued on July 28, 2024.
Relocations are being carried out in phases, and no unit headquarters will be included in this initial phase.
The relocation is part of the U.S. and Japan’s efforts to strengthen the deterrence and response capabilities of the Alliance while minimizing the impact on local communities, including those in Okinawa.
The construction of facilities supporting this relocation on Guam has been funded in large part by Japan, with up to $2.8 billion contributed in Fiscal Year 2008 dollars.
Marine Corps Base Camp Blaz, Naval Base Guam, and Andersen Air Force Base will all benefit from these infrastructure developments.
Joint training exercises between U.S. Marines and Japan’s Self-Defense Forces will further enhance the Alliance’s readiness and capabilities.
These exercises will take place in Guam and the CNMI, with discussions underway to expand training opportunities.
