Guam and the CNMI get national recognition as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognized our islands for their resilience.

Officials noted even as super typhoons swept through our communities, the Marianas found ways to take care of the environment.

For America Recycles Day, Guam EPA announced that the island composted a record-breaking 146,798 tons of waste in 2023.

This included large amounts of green waste from Typhoon Mawar.

EPA Pacific Southwest Regional Administrator, Martha Guzman said, “The Pacific islands continue to develop innovative, community-centered models to protect the environment.”

Governor Lou Leon Guerrero added, “Despite the global challenges, our island community remains steadfast in our commitment to sustain our island’s recycling efforts and support regenerative models of materials management through zero waste and circular economies.”

Additionally, Guam EPA continues serving the environment through the “Composting in Every Village” program.
