Investigation launched after Attorney General alleges drugs are getting in at the Port
An investigation is underway at the Port Authority of Guam following multiple allegations that drugs were somehow being smuggled through there.
Guam's Attorney General Doug Moylan made those claims after a second meeting with Governor Lou Leon Guerrero to address the problem was canceled.
Moylan pushed to meet with the administration today, but it will be rescheduled at the request of Port General Manager Rory Respicio who was unavailable to meet.
Still, Respicio said the allegations made by the AG raise concerns of possible deviations from established cargo handling and inspection procedures, jeopardizing the integrity of Port operations.
The investigation is in response to AG Moylan sending out a 100-page document of his action plan for meth interdiction at the Port.
Moylan stated, “Huge red flags were uncovered, specifically claiming ‘150 containers a month with tampered safety seals are being found to have been missing, broken or replaced with another seal Customs uses.’”
He is calling for the Governor to have the National Guard assist Customs.
Meantime, Respicio said, “While the specific incident falls under the jurisdiction of Guam Customs and law enforcement authorities, we are conducting our own internal investigation to ensure our operations remain above reproach. The Port authority will not tolerate any actions that compromise the security of our island.”
