The University of Guam is inviting the island's fishing community to join a free fisheries science workshop this weekend.

Hosted by UOG’s Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant, the Community Science Workshop aims to teach local fishers how to contribute vital data about their catches to help monitor Guam’s reef fisheries.

The workshop will take place at the Guam Green Growth Circular Economy Makerspace & Innovation Hub’s Green Store in Hagåtña on Friday, Dec. 20, from 6 to 7 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 21, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Leilani Sablan, project lead for Guihan for Guåhån, said the fishing community can play a crucial role in collecting data that helps monitor the health of Guam’s reefs and marine species.

Attendees will learn to use specially designed fishing mats to measure their catches and log the data, which can inform sustainable fishing practices.

Participants will also receive freebies like posters, stickers, and bags—and even have the chance to win gift certificates to fishing stores through the program’s incentive system.

People interested in participating can register for free online at https://guamgreengrowth.org/makerspace-innovation-hub/ today.

The team is also hosting the first-ever Guam Fish Fest on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025, at CHamoru Village.
