GDOE superintendent vows to end Simon Sanchez/JFK double-session next year
This school year marks Year 2 of the double-session for the Simon Sanchez High School Sharks and John F. Kennedy Islanders—and many are hoping next school year won't be the third. Yet, with few details emerging about a temporary campus for the Sharks and a ways to go before a new campus is fully operational, the future remains uncertain.
The superintendent of the Guam Department of Education has made a bold commitment to end the double-session schedule for both school communities.
But this aspiration remains out of reach—at least for now.
Dr. Kenneth Swanson told KUAM News, “Obviously, even if I got the go ahead on everything right now, I couldn’t turn it around and get them out this year.”
Still, the superintendent staying adamant that he will de-couple the schools by next year–though it’s unclear just how he’ll do that.
Swanson remaining tight-lipped about any developments regarding a temporary solution for the Simon Sanchez Sharks, including the possibility of a campus at Tumon Bay Mall or a modular facility near the existing Yigo school.
“It’s too soon to announce anything on that because there’s still some moving parts–I don’t want to set expectations in one place and disappoint people in another. So we’re just going to have to work at it a little bit longer," he said.
Despite the delay, Swanson assuring the Sharks he has not given up on these possibilities.
Meantime, his eye is also fixed on a permanent home for Simon Sanchez High schoolers. The superintendent attending weekly meetings on the multi-million-dollar project.
“Having a contractor and developer selected within this coming calendar year–I think, is a realistic expectation, and they’re re-configuring the type of project so that it can be done in two years–and that’s a pretty fast-track for a complex that size," he said.
He adds solicitation for a contractor and developer should be on the market by February and March.
This as Vince Arriola, director of the Department of Public Works, tells KUAM: the next step in the project will be to release a request for proposal for the financing and construction of the new campus.
