Longtime friends gather to feed the homeless on Saturday
A tight-knit group of relatives and longtime friends known as the Boys of Barrigada Heights came together this weekend to spread warmth and compassion to some of Guam's most vulnerable residents.
Jerrold Castro and JR Rebanal, along with others, turned an inspiring idea into a heartfelt reality
“It actually came up from Chris Castro, my cousin, he had an idea -let's go do something for the community, let's go feed the homeless. So all the boys got together and it was something we wanted to do, we thought it was good,” said Castro.
Pooling their resources and energy, the group fired up the grill near Paseo Stadium on Saturday morning. With clear skies and a generous spirit, they prepared a delicious spread of BBQ, red rice, sweet corn, and corn soup.
Those who stopped by not only enjoyed a hearty meal but were also greeted with smiles, kindness, and holiday cheer.
“We do have a few toys and giveaways for kids if they do show up. Just a good hot meal and some drinks,” said Rebanal.
Beyond the plates of food, the group handed out snacks like crackers and Pop-Tarts to everyone in need, ensuring no one left empty-handed.
Joining in the efforts were members of the Father Duenas Memorial School National Honor Society.
Their President, Justin Manglona, highlighted the importance of giving back.
“The importance of these events is not only to grow as a community but also during this holiday season we can give to the less fortunate on our island of Guam,” said Manglona.
The event’s success was made possible thanks to community partnerships, including Ambros, who donated drinks, and Blaster's Paradise, a residential cleaning and water-blasting service, which lent their support on-site.
In total, more than 90 plates of food were served.
As the day wrapped up, the group had one message for the island, “We want to say happy holidays and Merry Christmas to everybody, we also want to say we need more of this. This is the kind of stuff communities need to gather around and support each other especially those who are the most vulnerable in the community. And Merry Christmas, Guam!”
The Father Duenas Memorial School NHS echoed the sentiment, saying, “Merry Christmas from the Father Duenas National Honor Society.”
