Guam Legislature honors six retiring village mayors
Six retiring village mayors are recognized for their invaluable contributions to the island. This as Dededo, Hagatna, Agana Heights, Chalan Pago-Ordot, Malesso, and Santa Rita-Sumai start the new year off with new faces in leadership.
They are the heartbeat of each village on Guam. Whether its cutting grass, moving abandoned cars, or planning the next fiesta, there's no denying the time these mayors put into leading their communities. This new year, six villages will be getting a change in leadership now that these six long serving mayors have retired.
Each stepping into the Guam Legislature this week recognized for their exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to serving the people of Guam.
Speaker Therese Terlaje said, "They're a testament to your hard work, your heart for your villages, your vision for a brighter future for Guam."
Dededo mayor Melissa Savares, Hagatna mayor John Aguon Cruz, Agana Heights mayor Paul McDonald, Chalan Pago-Ordot mayor Jessy Cruz Gogue, Malesso mayor Ernest Chargualaf, and Santa Rita-Sumai mayor Dale Alvarez were presented certificates and leis in recognition of their years of service. Each stepped forward to receive these honors inside the guam congress building.
They were praised by Speaker Terlaje for the unique and innovative ways they addressed the everyday needs of their constituents, as she said, “Mayors are the backbone of our communities, addressing issues that directly impact the daily lives of our residents. From infrastructure improvements to disaster response and fostering community spirit. Through events and initiatives, your leadership has made a significant difference in the lives of many, many people, generations of families.”
Even after already dedicating their careers to serving Guam through roles in education and the armed forces, they still gave back by leading in their respective villages.
Some served at least a decade, while others served even longer. "So, on behalf of the people of Guam, I express our deepest gratitude for your service and hope these resolutions serve as a small, but meaningful token of our appreciation," the speaker offered.
As these six mayors step aside for new leadership takeover, no doubt their legacies will remain in the work each put into their villages and toward the people they served. Congratulations, retiring mayors, and thank you for your years of service!
