Drag race caught on camera, driver given citation following crash
An illegal street race caught on camera.
The driver of a pickup truck involved if ticketed by Guam Police.
Officers investigating after the cell phone video circulated on social media.
A drag race along the road to the Lanyon Landfill in Inalahan last Sunday.
Two pickup trucks revving their engines before taking off.
"I was forwarded that video last night and I sent it to the command and that operator reported - the police officers that responded weren't aware of that video and the operator of that vehicle that ran off the road reported that he ran off to avoid striking an animal, said Chief of Police Stephen Ignacio.
The driver on the left swerves before losing control and crashing.
"But as you clearly see in the video there is no animal and it looks like during the course of the drag racing the operator lost control and ran off the toward," he said.
Ignacio says that driver was forced to see his officers once more in the new year.
"The operator of that vehicle was brought in and cited for drag racing. We are looking for any information on the second vehicle that was involved in it so we can also cite that operator as well," he said.
No major injuries were reported.
But the top brass says this is just one example why Guam needs a raceway park.
"That incident goes both ways. That's what happens when you do drag racing in an uncontrolled environment. It also goes to the point and we've always a supporter of whoever the organization be in the Guam Motor sports Association that having that raceway park reopen so that there is a safe venue for these types of activities. When there is no venues for safe drag race then people are unfortunately going to look for other illegal places to hold their speed or drag racing contest," he said.
Meantime, anyone with information that could help authorities investigate the drag race caught on camera is asked to call police.
