The island village mayors and vice mayors are also set to be sworn-in this weekend. Here's what you can expect if you plan to attend.

It's a day to celebrate the democratic process and the leaders chosen by our communities. At the Guam Museum, preparations were well underway Friday ahead of the 18th mayoral and vice mayoral inauguration ceremony. Newly-elected and re-elected mayors and vice mayors from Guam’s villages are set to come together to take the oath of office for their terms of public service.

Jesse Alig, the Mayor's Council of Guam president, shared more about the preparation process, telling KUAM News, “We want to make sure that we swear everyone in on time.” He added, “We’re communicating with Park Police from DPR to help us with the traffic control that night. Roads will be closed at noon and they’ll open up after the 6:30 ceremony.”

Former executive director of the Mayor's Council Angel Sablan says, "It's a major event. There are 25 to 26 mayors and vice mayors that are being inaugurated, so it is a big event, it's going to be a big crowd. And even though the ceremony might not be that long, but like I said, 10 seconds, 30 seconds is all it takes to make something go wrong."

Before the ceremony, and just across the street, there will also be a mass service held at the Dulce Nombre De Maria Cathedral-Basilica, and then a CHamoru blessing will occur to kick-off the inauguration ceremony back at the museum.

“Being a mayor or vice mayor is not easy. It’s the first person you go to in any village. I certainly want to congratulate all those that are coming in as new mayors and vice mayors. I give my heartfelt appreciation to those that are retiring. Giving back to the people, and working for the people is a noble thing," said Sablan.

To join the celebration from home, follow the Cathedral's Facebook Page for the livestream of the mass, starting at 5pm this Saturday.

And to watch the ceremony, tune-in to the Mayor’s Council of Guam's YouTube channel livestream at 6:30pm.
