Public Health is closely monitoring the spike in norovirus cases in the United States.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 91 reported outbreaks during the week of December 5, 2024, marking a 32% increase from the previous week.

No cases have been reported locally.

Norovirus, often called the “stomach flu” or “stomach bug,” is a highly contagious virus that can spread through direct contact with an infected person, consuming contaminated food or beverages, and touching surfaces or objects contaminated with the virus.

Symptoms typically appear 12 to 48 hours after exposure.

While most recover within one to three days, vulnerable groups such as children under 5, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness.
