Seventy-three ambitious high school students from nine schools across Guam, are taking major steps toward their future careers through the Guam Department of Labor’s Year-Round In-School Youth Program Winter Session. The program began on December 23rd, 2024 and wrapped up on January 3rd, 2025.

The students participated in two distinct course tracks designed to enhance their career-readiness skills. While one group trained in Customer Service at the Guam Community College, the other gained hands-on experience in Core Curriculum and Electrical Level I at the GCA Trades Academy.

David Dell’Isola, Director of the Guam Department of Labor (GDL), emphasized the importance of such programs in providing local youth with critical skills for the future. "This program equips students with critical skills and knowledge that will help them succeed in future employment opportunities," Dell'Isola said. "Programs like these provide critical pathways for our youth to gain valuable industry knowledge and hands-on experience, giving them a competitive edge in the workforce and contributing to Guam's economic growth."

The Year-Round In-School Youth Program serves as a key initiative to help students explore potential career paths. It also serves as an alternative to enrolling in traditional college courses by providing practical experience and exposure to various industries. Per GDL, all seventy-three students have identified occupational interests and potential employer partners, which will set the stage for their continued enrollment in the Summer Internship program.

Students who successfully complete the Winter Session will not only earn certifications in their respective fields but will also be eligible for summer job opportunities facilitated by the GDL. This will further solidify their transition into the workforce, giving them the chance to apply their new skills in real-world environments.

“This initiative is about more than just skill-building,” Dell'Isola added. “It’s about empowering our youth, instilling confidence, and ensuring they have the tools needed to succeed in their future endeavors. We’re proud of these students and excited to see how they will contribute to Guam’s workforce.”
In completing the Winter Session, these students are poised to move forward in their career journeys and pave the way for future success in Guam’s evolving workforce.
