At three stories and over 80,000 square feet, could the Guam Department of Education’s Central Offices in Tiyan be the solution for Simon Sanchez High School students still without a permanent campus? It’s an idea proposed by Guam Education Board vice chair Angel Sablan during this month’s GEB meeting at John F. Kennedy High School, where the Islanders and Sharks currently share a campus under a double-session schedule.

“Would it be cheaper, would it be more economical if the DOE central goes out there and leases a building, leases a couple of buildings, leases a warehouse for their use for your use, and give Simon Sanchez central to use as a temporary classroom," said Sablan.

His suggestion comes after GDOE superintendent Dr. Kenneth Swanson confirmed that FEMA has ruled out the possibility of using the unfinished Tumon Bay Mall as a temporary campus for the Sharks.

And with promises to decouple both communities by next school year, alternative options include a similar arrangement at F.B. Leon Guerrero Middle School or a temporary campus near the current Sanchez site in Yigo. However, no final decision has been made by Swanson.

In the meantime, the superintendent cautiously estimates that a new permanent campus for Simon Sanchez High School could be completed within two years.
