Guam unemployment down 0.7%, work continues for meaningful jobs
The unemployment rate has hit a new low, dropping to 3.4%, marking an improvement in Guam's job market. And while this is a positive shift for our economy, local job seekers are still facing challenges.
The decline marks a 0.7% decrease from the last year. KUAM News hit the road to talk to locals to see how they feel about this shift in the island’s job market. “I’m actually retired already. So, now I see that there’s a lot of employment going on now. It’s a lot better for Guam’s economy," said one resident.
This improvement reflects both economic recovery and successful workforce programs. However, Governor Lou Leon Guerrero says there's still much to be done, as she states, “Understanding shifts in employment trends is key to ensuring all residents have access to meaningful job opportunities.”
Despite the improvement, job seekers face challenges regarding documentation and certification. Another neighbor said, “I guess it would just depend on what job you’re looking for. If they have special requirements or if they need documentation. Just getting some of the documentation can be a hassle. I myself am trying to get a certain health certificate so, I need to sign up for that and then take the test.”
Proper transportation also remains a key issue and concern for many. Yet another Guamanian shared, “I’m sure the thing is going down, but for my community we’re still struggling. From what I understand, its transportation for these people. I mean, they can do the job, but I see them walking and walking. So, maybe a better bus system or something like that.”
The Guam Department of Labor has been broadening the range of opportunity, providing training and job readiness programs. Agency director David Dell’isola says, “I understand the challenges employers face in finding skilled workers, and we’re actively collaborating with other agencies and partners to address these issues.”
With unemployment down, Guam's economy is showing recovery. But there’s still work ahead to ensure everyone has access to meaningful job opportunities.
