Branding is everything, and wisely choosing your company's name is critical to survival. So, when your family's livelihood is called "Guam Bakery", there's no guesswork about what you do and who you do it for - and that's a recipe for sustained success.

Henri Oftana, the company's general manager, told KUAM News about its origins on January 11, 1975, explaining, "The bakery was just a small part of the grocery store. It was my aunt and uncle, and then that's when my my parents started the bakery. It was small, just retail - literally a mom and pop operation".

"The seasons determine what's popular," he added. "Obviously, on Thanksgiving Day we do a lot of pumpkin pies, but for the most part, it's our breads that people keep coming back to".

And for 50 years, the Dededo operation has been getting up early, firing-up the oven, applying icing and making delicious food. This weekend marks the bakery reaching the half-century milestone.

The GM continued, "On Saturday, we're doing a big sale with our pan de leche and our our Pullman bread. A loaf of bread will be sold at $0.79, rolling it back to 1975 prices and our pan de leche will be a buck a package. We've expanded to meet the needs of the community, we've expanded the needs of restaurants or hotels, or whatever customers come in. If they have a need for something , they ask us if we can do it - if we can do it, great! If we can't, we learn how to do it. And we go from there, and so we've gone from just a handful of items to a plethora of items."

The Oftana family has also been leaders within the local Filipino community, hosting the annual Santo Nino celebration to honor their heritage and share their culture.

Oftan said proudly but humbly of his family's legacy, "We're very big with our faith, and that has driven a lot of our business decisions. It's always about family, about faith, and about our culture."
