The administration submitted its comments to the environmental impact statement done by the Missile Defense Agency.

The agency is looking to construct about a dozen missile defense systems across the island in the coming years.

Governor Lou Leon Guerrero shares what concerns she wants the feds to address before moving forward with the project.

"For people's information, the EIS is the Economic Statement that is necessary to be done when there any federal projects happening, what is the impact on the community as a result of the project," she told KUAM News. "In this case, it is the missile defense system. So we at the government submitted our comments and we talked to them about the impact it will have on health care as a result population, impact it will have on education, on safety, on utilities, roads and so forth. This information we give to them they would look at that. Then we also provided mitigation measures for example if it's going to impact our hospital then we want them to help us with funding with building the hospital, providing more resources in expanding our services to meet the needs of an increased population as a result of their presence. Same with education and public safety. How does the federal government mitigate the risks that has happened or the impact as a result of the military buildup and the missile defense system in coming to our island."

The 75-day public comment period for the Missile Defense Agency’s proposed enhanced integrated air and missile defense system on Guam closed on January 8th.

As we reported, Pacific Center for Island Sustainability pointed out the MDA's lack of housing plans for military personnel, contractors, and foreign construction workers.

Prutehi Guahan has protested against the missle defense system.
