Naval Base Guam successfully contained a diesel fuel spill in Apra Harbor on Jan. 12, caused during routine refueling operations between the USS Lake Erie and a Navy fuel barge.

According to a press release, the spill, estimated at approximately 2,200 gallons, was entirely secured using floating booms, skimmers, and absorbent pads, with cleanup completed the following day.

According to NBG officials, the incident had no impact on natural resources, the community’s water supply, or naval operations. Both the National Response Center and the Guam Environmental Protection Agency monitored the cleanup process to ensure compliance with environmental protocols.

The Navy emphasized its commitment to environmental stewardship and collaboration with regulatory partners to prevent future incidents.

The USS Lake Erie, homeported in San Diego, operates under Destroyer Squadron 15 within the U.S. 7th Fleet.
