Guam Police Department to upgrade 30-year old communication system
When Stephen Ignacio became Chief for the Guam Police Department in 2019, one of the goals he had for the department was securing a communications system, also known as a land mobile radio system.
“We realized the system we had was over 30 years old. It was way past its useful life,” said Ignacio.
Ignacio, noted they no longer could be satisfied with band-aid fixes, an upgrade was needed for the antiquated system.
Enter the P25 system.
The communication system was a little over $11.5 million and was purchased by the Government of Guam using federal American Rescue Plan funds.
To build such a modern system, there was needed expertise and a consultant was required. Banyan Networks was tapped in 2022 to help navigate GPD through the process.
“Glad to say that at the end of 2024 finally awarded the contract to motorola solutions. To bring Guam's public safety communication system to the modern age,” Ignacio added.
In a press conference held recently at Adelup, vice President of Motorola Solutions, Josh Mendoza said the P25 system will enhance coverage, reliability and add security for first responders.
“It's an honor for us to be here among this group of leaders dedicated to Guam's public safety mission. As a trusted technology provider to public safety agencies all over the world, for nearly a century, it's an honor to be here celebrating this event with GovGuam,” said Mendoza.
Governor Lou Leon Guerrero said that one of the things that she and the Lt. Governor worry every day about is the safety of the people.
“Thats why we are very supportive in providing our law enforcement whose mission is to protect and serve the people of Guam,” said Leon Guerrero.
She added that communication is not a luxury. It's a necessity in our lives and that the administration aims to. Provide for the quality of life, the protection of life, and the betterment of our island and our people.
