After an apparent break in communication, the Guam Police Department has now confirmed they released inaccurate information that the driver in this past weekend's crash in Dededo had died.  Thankfully, that driver is alive but remains in critical condition at the hospital.

The apparent mix-up resulted in many viewers questioning media reports of the driver's condition and the noting the "fake news" that was sourced by GPD.

Investigators say the driver lost control and crashed into a bus stop before the car caught fire.  Medics with the Guam Fire Department pulled the driver from the wreckage and rushed him to Guam Regional Medical City.

More than 20 hours after police spokesperson Officer Berlyn Savella released the driver's name and incorrectly stated that he died, Savella issued a press release midday Tuesday, calling for clarification and a correction. She stated, "Further investigation has revealed that the initial information about the lone operator involved in a serious traffic crash along Route 27 Dededo being deceased was incorrect. Due to medical policies and urgent care needs, the operator's status was initially provided by a family member in good faith. It has now been confirmed by the hospital that the operator is alive and currently in critical condition under the intensive care unit at GRMC".

Officer Savella states GPD relies on factual information, admitting they "regret any miscommunication" and calling it "an unfortunate mix-up".
