Imagine a nationally recognized trail that spans across the island inviting locals and visitors from all over. That's the idea educator and author Tom Renfro shares with KUAM.

He hopes to get as many in the community involved to create the Guam National Trail.

Local educator and author Tom Renfro has an idea that could very well help bring out the true beauty of the island.

The Guam National Trail Project, says Renfro, "It circumnavigates Guam, it stays within as close as we can to the high tide mark all around mark, and it uses as many ancient bull cart trails as possible."

He compares the project to the trails that span countries across the world including the Continental Divide Trail and the Appalachian Trail, adding a trail circling Guam would be much less complicated to develop.

"So it’d gain worldwide publicity for Guam which should help with GVB. The second thing, it would encourage the citizens to explore their own island and their own history. Even in their villages, they can walk a matter of 100 meters and hook up with the trail and walk it and learn about it and feel maybe a part of the history," he said.

Renfro suggesting it would become a huge draw for tourists, become a venue for racing events, and bring more foot traffic to businesses set up along it.

"Another benefit, the trail could enable access to current off limit places on Guam for our citizens. What makes me really sad it when I moved here in 1993 you could drive to double reef…I think that is the most beautiful beach on island, and I ask many on island if they’ve ever been and they don’t even know what it is," he said.

He has already driven at least 60 percent of the proposed trail starting from Tumon and heading south along side Marine Corps Drive.

The idea is still in its infancy stages.

"We are just getting started with this so I would like for anybody to contact me and I am certain we will have a meeting the first Sunday of every month," he said.

Renfro’s next public meeting to discuss the trail is set for Sunday, February 3rd at 2pm at the Ypao Beach Park amphitheater.

He invites the community to participate.
