The Guam Department of Agriculture is inviting the public to weigh in on a proposal that could impact Guam's culture, economy, and environment.

Federal regulators are considering adding ten species of giant clams, known locally as Hima to the Endangered Species Act.

To help residents understand what this means, DOAG will host two public forums. One in Dededo on Jan. 31 and another in Mangilao on Feb. 7.

The details are below:

Dededo Senior Citizen Center:

  • Date: Friday, January 31, 2025
  • Time: 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Mangilao Community Center:

  • Date: Friday, February 7, 2025
  • Time: 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

These meetings will explain NOAA’s proposal, discuss potential impacts on local artisans, businesses, and researchers, and guide residents on how to submit comments.

This is a crucial opportunity for the people of Guam to learn details of this issue and have their voices heard by submitting effective comments in writing.

The listing of Giant Clams could impact various sectors, from traditional crafts to emerging aquaculture initiatives, making it more important than ever for the community to engage. Attendees will be encouraged to submit public comments, which could influence the final decision on the proposed rule.
