John F. Kennedy High School student Nichelle R. Torcelino has made history as the first and only high school student from Guam to participate in the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium in Hawaii.

Nichelle's groundbreaking research project, titled “Phylogenetic Insights into Guam Native Tree Fern, Sphaeropteris lunulata, using Nanopore Sequencing,” earned her a spot as a semi-finalist in the program.

Dr. George Hui, the Pacific STEP-UP Director, played a pivotal role in supporting Nichelle's research. His guidance and expertise were instrumental in the successful completion of her project. Additionally, Ms. Colette

Beausoliel, Nichelle’s Pre-Engineering teacher at JFKHS, provided invaluable assistance during the research paper revision process.

“Nichelle's remarkable achievement is a monumental milestone for Guam's academic community. Her dedication and hard work have not only brought immense pride to John F. Kennedy High School but have also inspired the entire island of Guam. Nichelle's success serves as a beacon of hope and motivation for future generations of students, showcasing the incredible potential and talent within our community,” said Superintendent Dr. Erik Swanson.
