Guam families forced to cut back as essential food prices surge
Prices at the grocery store locally have been climbing even months before President Trump's tariffs and for many in Guam, it's hitting where it hurts the most, their wallets.
Eggs, bread, and milk. Staple items found in nearly every home.
“Yeah, everything is high. Everything is expensive,” said a resident.
But now, these essentials are becoming a growing burden on household budgets.
The prices are rising so quickly that local stores are feeling the impacts. We priced various items just today in stores across the island.
The average cost of a loaf of bread sitting at $5.15.
A half gallon of milk? $7.65.
And the average cost of eggs is now anywhere from $9.99 to $13 per dozen.
That's nearly double the cost from just two years ago in January 2023.
The average price range for a dozen eggs then were anywhere from $6 to $8.
“Nowadays it's hard to live on Guam with those kinds of prices because I think these three items are used and eaten daily, as their daily meals,” said another.
A store manager admitting to KUAM the challenge is sourcing the eggs, as the price per case continues to spike.
While store owners grapple with the challenges of rising costs, its shoppers who are feeling the strain at the check out.
Local shoppers shared their frustrations about the prices skyrocketing. Some admit it's forced them to make adjustments to their shopping and spending habits.
“[I] shop less. I just shop for whatever I really need,” one shopper said.
“For the price to be raised, I think some people won’t be able to afford it,” another shopper added.
A tough reality for this shopper each time she goes to the grocery store.
“[It's] a really big change. Before I could buy three to four dozens. Now, I can only afford one [at a time] so I can see if I can afford the next one,” another shopper said.
No doubt, a hefty price to pay that's expected to only get heftier with the Trump administration’s proposed tariff increase.
