It is with heavy hearts that the Guam Contractors Association announces the passing of its former president, James Martinez, who passed away late Sunday night, Feb. 9, 2025.
Martinez, who led the GCA for 23 years, is remembered for his unwavering commitment to both the organization and Guam’s construction industry.
During his tenure, Martinez’s visionary leadership helped grow GCA’s membership to over 500 members and reshaped the local construction landscape.
Among his many contributions, Martinez co-founded the GCA Trades Academy in 2006, where he also served as the first Master Trainer.
He launched innovative programs like "Pizza, Pop and Power Tools" and "Construction Warriors" to inspire youth and foster the next generation of professionals.
Martinez was also the driving force behind the creation of the Joseph Leasiolagi “Samoan Joe” Annual Safety Conference, the GCA Construction & Truck Rodeo, and the GCA Industry Trade Fair & Expo, initiatives that have become cornerstones of the local construction community.
His legacy extends to the GCA Apprenticeship Program, which tripled the number of active apprentices on the island, and the Excellence in Construction and Contractor of the Year Awards. His leadership will always be remembered as a benchmark for success in the industry.
“James wasn't just a leader; he was a mentor and a visionary who transformed our industry and touched countless lives,” said Desiree Lizama, interim-President of the Guam Contractors Association. “His passion for developing the next generation of construction professionals and his commitment to safety and excellence in the construction industry is what guides us everyday.”
