Speaker Frank Blas Jr. met with community members Wednesday morning to discuss the creation of a special legislative commission aimed at revitalizing Guam's tourism industry.
It would address the impact of increased military personnel, and enhance the quality of life for residents.
As highlighted in his presentation to the Guam Chamber of Commerce, Spkr. Blas emphasized the need to capitalize on existing opportunities that could enhance Guam's appeal to visitors.
“I acknowledge and appreciate the work that continues with the Guam
Visitors Bureau and other organizations towards rebuilding our tourism industry, however, outside of providing subsidies and discounts to bring visitors and tour representatives here and wanting to continue to discuss the need for money to rebuild or rehabilitate existing attractions, I believe that we should equally focus on the one thing that we can offer to the world that no other destination can provide – our warmth and hospitality – our culture and heritage,” said Blas.
The special legislative commission will be formalized through a legislative resolution and recognized as an official function of the 38th Guam Legislature under the Office of the Speaker.
The commission will comprise representatives from tourism, entrepreneurship, cultural and historical preservation, human resources, and both civilian and military morale and welfare.
“Our introductory meeting was exciting in that everyone agreed that while we don’t have the draw of a big attraction or big-name events to entice visitors, we can provide an experience that is not just enjoyable and memorable, but also unique and exciting to share,” added Blas.
The initiative is expected to play a crucial role in addressing morale and welfare issues, especially with the anticipated influx of military personnel, support staff, and their families.
The group will reconvene in two weeks to finalize the language for the enabling resolution and begin laying the groundwork for the Guam Experience initiative.
