In an annual tradition, football-loving Guamanians celebrated a touchdown takeover for island pigskin fans, as they took part in Super Bowl Monday.

Fly, Eagles, fly! The Philadelphia Eagles claim Super Bowl glory in a heart-stopping victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. From an epic halftime performance to an appearance by President Donald Trump and even a Guam native making history on the New Orleans field, this year’s big game had the world buzzing—including fans right here at home.

It’s a touchdown takeover for island football fans. Sal Rodriguez cheered, “Let’s go, Chiefs! Threepeat!” with Eagles diehard Elliot Maerdi saying, “Go Eagles this season!”

At the Sandcastle in Tumon, Rodriguez, a Kansas City native, watches the first snap with home-field pride. “I got to support my team!” he exclaimed.

But not everyone’s rooting for the same team. Fans like Taylor Avila at Carabao Brewing bringing some unexpected surprises, saying, “I’m rooting for the Eagles!"

That hope going long—with the Eagles soaring to their second Super Bowl victory, grounding the Chiefs’ quest of a historic three-peat. Husband and wife Bre Alaadel bracing for a victory or a fumble—rooting for rival teams, saying, “They’re down by 24 points, 24-zero, but I’m from Kansas, so I have to stay loyal," with spouse Romi sharing, “I’m tired of the Chiefs, honestly. I’m tired of seeing them at the Super Bowl.”

Meantime, love for the Eagles stretching all the way to New Orleans, where Guam native and Philadelphia Eagles cheerleader Hanna Sahagon brings some island pride to the championship win.

“To even get onto the level to be an NFL cheerleader to make that team and then to watch your team just be so successful and so talented that they get to this stage… it’s just  so amazing, and I’m just feeling grateful and humbled that we get to be in this situation and that I get to experience it," she said.

And while this proud island girl soars to new heights, she shares this message with her home, “To everyone watching the Super Bowl–thank you so much for watching! I feel so grateful to see the outpouring of support and messages from everyone back home–it makes me so happy. And, of course, I have to say it: go, birds!”
