Next ‘Nihi’ cooking class series at UOG to focus on diabetes

Diabetic residents, their families, and those wanting to prevent diabetes are invited to a four-session cooking class from the nutrition team at University of Guam Cooperative Extension & Outreach.
The series titled, “Nihi ta Fanmama’tinas (Let’s Cook) for Diabetes,” will teach recipes and foods for every meal of the day that will keep blood sugars in check.
Participants will get hands-on experience making meals that follow the Diabetes Plate Method of the American Diabetes Association.
The method uses a sectioned plate as a simple tool that ensures half of the plate is non-starchy vegetables, one-quarter is proteins, and one-quarter is carbohydrates, with no sugary beverages.
Each class will cover a health topic and a cooking theme related to diabetes:
Monday, Feb. 24
Topic: Learning About Diabetes
Cooking Theme: Breakfast options using the Diabetes Plate Method
Wednesday, Feb. 26
Topic: Making Healthy Food Choices
Cooking Theme: Lunch options using the Diabetes Plate Method
Monday, March 10
Topic: Taking Care of Your Heart
Cooking Theme: Dinner options using the Diabetes Plate Method
Wednesday, March 12
Topic: Setting Healthy Goals
Cooking Theme: Diabetic-friendly snack and dessert recipes
The classes will take place from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Agriculture & Life Sciences Building, Room 125B, on the UOG campus and will be led by registered dietitian nutritionist Dr. Tanisha Aflague and extension associate Clarissa Barcinas.
Each session has a registration fee of $10, which covers workshop materials and food samples. Participants are encouraged to sign up for all four sessions.
