Smoke filled the air along Uhang Street in Macheche Dededo Tuesday night.

Firefighters with the Guam Fire Department responded to this lot where multiple cars and a 40-foot container caught fire.

The heavy smoke quickly became a concern for those living in this residential street.

Epimania Laxamana's home was just steps away from the burning rubble.

“I just came home and then when I got out of my car I smelled something. I thought my car overheated,” said Laxamana.

Laxamana's worries only grew from what she spotted nearby.

“Oh it's burning. There's a fire I said. I got nervous and then I called 911,” added Laxamana.

Her neighbor across the street had already called for help after hearing an explosion.

GFD asked residents to temporarily evacuate, shut their windows and turn off their air conditioning.

“Oh I'm nervous. We put our car in the back,” said Laxamana.

She noticed embers flying toward her garage.

Other neighbors like Warrington Dalrymple also noticed what was happening so close to his home.

“I was laying down watching television and all of a sudden my power went out. The wife said she heard an explosion but I didn't hear it,” said Dalrymple. “Nothing but black smoke. Nothing but black smoke.”

The flames were put out in about an hour.

No one was injured.

GFD confirmed the property is a lot that a construction company uses as storage but the fire sparked an even bigger concern for those that call this place home.

“It's a residential area and there should not be any construction material stored over here. That's the very first thing that went through my mind and I knew eventually that was going to happen one day. And today was that day,” said Dalrymple.

He encourages the Dededo Mayor to do something about it.

Mayor Peter Benavente told KUAM he went by the property and told the owner the area is not zoned for storing construction material.

Medel Bias said his construction company, A.B. Mer, is no longer operating.

“Actually this is my daughter's property and I just used it for storing it and no construction for years already,” said Bias.

Bias states he doesn’t know what could’ve started the fire. He assures authorities that he will clean it up.

“Of course I am worried,” Bias said. “Actually, I've been cleaning it up for the past two weeks because I am planning to chip all the grass and wood and I plan to rent a wood chipper but I don't know what happened.”

The question, “what happened?,” is what fire investigators are now trying to find out.
