In her last address, Governor Lou Leon Guerrero declared that the state of our island is strong and our future is bright.

But is that how residents feel one year later?

“It’s pretty good,” said Dededo resident, Juan Ramos.

“Can be better,” added Harmon resident, Jessica Scharff.

“Terrible! They need to fix it up much better,” said Janette Quitugua from Dededo.

From satisfied to frustrated, residents shared the issues they hope Governor Lou Leon Guerrero will touch on as she’s set to deliver her seventh State of the island address Wednesday night.

For Scharff, education is a pressing issue, as the Guam Department of Education is set to close one school by year’s end as part of its maximization efforts in their financial state.

“My kid’s school, one of them is going to shut down, so, I’m just worried,” said Scharff.

Others like Ramos are worried about drugs and the cost of living.

“The drug problem and the higher prices on Guam,” added Ramos.

And for those like Quitugua, it’s the stray dog crisis that she wants solved, as the issue she says is putting residents at risk.

“Too many stray dogs! They really need to take care of that! You know, children are walking home from school, and I’ve seen it–where this mother would get bitten because six dogs are around her,” said Quitugua.

It’s all things these residents will be listening to as the Governor takes the podium at the Guam Congress building.
