Guam Memorial hospital is taking a major step forward in cardiac care with the acquisition of its first-ever intra-aortic balloon pump, a critical device that provides life-saving support for patients experiencing severe heart failure or cardiogenic shock.

This state-of-the-art technology works by improving blood flow and reducing the workload on the heart, giving critical patients a better chance of recovery. For years, those requiring this level of care had to be transferred off-island for treatment.

But now, with this new equipment, life-saving cardiac support can be provided right here at home.

Cardiologist Dr. Bishoy Elbebawy calls the acquisition a historic moment for GMH, saying the IABP will not only improve patient outcomes but also keep families together during medical emergencies.

The device will be used in conjunction with GMH’s high-end Ge Allia Angiosuite machine, further strengthening the hospital’s ability to perform complex cardiac procedures.
