The island’s public safety agencies have been spared from losing any federal funding in relation to the executive orders that been coming out to the Trump administration.

Public safety oversight chair Sen. Shawn Gumataotao received feedback from the Guam Fire Department, Guam Police Department, Department of Parks and Recreation, Department of Agriculture, Guam Peace Officer Standards & Training Commission, Port Authority of Guam, and Offices of Homeland Security and Civil Defense.

“Each Government of Guam public safety and emergency management agency has confirmed that White House actions are not affecting their work at this time,” said Gumataotao. “I appreciate the effort of the agencies for pulling together the details-significant reassurance for a critical workforce in Guam.”

On Feb. 26, the Committee asked each public safety agency to thoroughly review the relevant White House Executive Orders and specific guidance from their federal grantor agencies and identify all local impacts.

The request was made by the Committee, despite the White House Executive Orders explicitly exempting law enforcement, public safety and immigration enforcement nationwide.

“Guam’s public safety and emergency management agencies are playing a significant role in an expansive effort to, among other things, protect our island borders and fight the drug problems in our villages,” he said.
