An officer with the Guam Police Department was forced to use their duty weapon after a drunk driver ignored instructions to turn away from a crash scene.

It happened around 2 am at the Route 1 and Route 16 intersection near the Micronesia Mall in Dededo.

Officers responded to a non-fatal crash at the time.

As traffic was being directed away from the area, a drunk driver approached the scene attempting to drive toward officers and first responders.

Police say the officer was concerned for their safety when they decided to open fire.

No injuries were reported.

The driver, identified as Angela Tenorio, was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence.

She is being held at the Department of Corrections prison.

A GPD internal affairs investigation is
underway and the officer involved has been placed on paid leave.

In response to the shooting, GPD states, "We remain committed to transparency and due process while ensuring a thorough investigation."
