Education oversight chair: Summer 2027 completion of Sanchez not good enough

The new Simon Sanchez High School campus in Yigo could be built by Summer 2027. But education oversight chair Senator Vince Borja says that's not soon enough. Adelup and the Department of Public Works announced the request for proposal will be issued soon for the development of the new state-of-the-art facility.
Officials said this major project will be delivered through a public-private partnership utilizing a finance, demolition, design, build, lease/leaseback, and insure/capital maintenance project delivery method.
Senator Borja told The Point that the priority is to get the Sanchez High students to a temporary campus, so they no longer need to be in double-session at John F. Kennedy High.
"They are losing their grit. Students are ok with this new schedule of leaving at 12 in the afternoon and the other way around – some like sleeping in and showing up to school in the afternoon. 0049 It’s going to hurt our workforce. I’m not saying it’s going to be lazy but gone are the days of these guys being at school all day and the other issues like bringing kids back and forth. Sanchez (plan) is great – 2027 is still not good enough. We need to figure out a way to get these guys back to a full day schedule," he said.
DPW anticipates selecting a developer by June 2025.
