Tragic death at Guam Memorial Hospital sparks concerns over patient care and oversight

A heartbreaking development that now leaves one family mourning the loss of their sister and others in the community raising red flags over what could have been done at the hospital to prevent this woman's death.
KUAM brings you a timeline of the events we have learned about this tragedy.
The woman, who authorities have not yet identified, went to the Guam Memorial Hospital around 12 p.m. Saturday.
She was seen at the emergency room and apparently discharged shortly after.
A relative, who had accompanied her, stepped away to handle discharge paperwork.
That afternoon, maintenance staff later discovered her unresponsive in the hospital courtyard.
It was at 5 p.m. that Guam police were called to the scene.
GPD confirmed that detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division are investigating.
Another relative took to social media to detail that the woman was in pain, claiming it was not assessed properly and that GMH took it lightly. The family member writing the woman was given medication and discharged even after she complained that the pain was excruciating.
“If they had kept her overnight and assessed her pain, maybe she’d be alive today,” that family member wrote.
“We are shocked and saddened, wishing we could have been there to offer support during your most challenging moments,” adding, “You will be deeply missed and loved, dear sister.”
Her statement prompted further community concern, with some questioning whether negligence played a role in this tragedy.
Health Oversight Chair Senator Sabrina Salas Matanane told KUAM, “I am deeply concerned about this tragic loss of life. This was a person with a family, someone loved, who was receiving treatment earlier and is now deceased. We must find out what happened.”
GMH Management has yet to respond to KUAM’s requests for comment.
For now, police await the results of an autopsy.
KUAM also offers our prayers and condolences to the family.
