The patient who was apparently discharged from the Guam Memorial Hospital moments before being found dead in the courtyard has been identified as 58-year-old Rita Perez of Mangilao.

The incident happened on March 15.

Family members reported Perez had gone to the hospital after experiencing excruciating pain prior to being discharged.

She was later found unresponsive on the ground floor.

The Guam Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division is leading the death investigation.

KUAM asked Guam police Chief Stephen Ignacio if the investigation includes looking into allegations of negligence at GMH.

“We will wait for the toxicology reports to determine if there is anything there that contributed to the death,” said Ignacio. “The big question is what caused Ms. Perez to be found on the first floor after falling three floors. We don’t know yet what caused it.”

Authorities said there are “a lot of unknowns,” as they await the results from the chief medical examiner.

“We are still a long way from being done,” he said.
