A major development in the death of a woman at the Guam Memorial Hospital.

Police confirmed the woman was 58-year-old Rita Perez.

Police Chief Stephen Ignacio now confirms Perez fell several stories to her death before being found in the hospital courtyard.

Questions still remain after a dead body was found near the Guam Memorial hospital ten days ago and the community wants answers but hospital leaders are still keeping silent on the circumstances surrounding the death.

As we enter week two, KUAM asked them to address the situation, but they say they can't as they're bound by HIPAA, meaning they have to protect sensitive patient information.

Ignacio gave new details into the ongoing death investigation, saying Perez fell from the third floor and was found on the first floor courtyard inside the hospital on March 15.

KUAM asked, “The sister of Rita did make it known to KUAM, she responded in one of our reports that her sister was complaining of excruciating pain in her face. That's what she went to GMH for, according to the sister. Are you investigating GMH for negligence?”

“We are waiting for the toxicology report to determine if there's anything there that may have contributed to the death. We will work closely with our investigators to determine. I think the big question is what caused Ms. Perez was found on the first floor after falling from three floors,” said Ignacio.

He notes the police department is also trying to work with the Attorney General’s Office to find out what exactly was Perez's treatment at the hospital that day.

Ignacio emphasized that the investigation is far from over.

“There’s a lot of things we need to look into. We're still a long way from being done,” said Ignacio. “There's a lot of unknowns at this point, but out of respect to the family and not getting in front of assumptions of what may have caused this to occur. I think what we need to do is concentrate on where the facts take us.”

As reported, Perez's sister contends, “Her pain was not assessed properly and they took it lightly…if they had kept her overnight and assessed her pain maybe she’d be alive today.”

Several in the community have been reaching out sharing your experiences.

The family of a 75-year-old man who died outside GMH after he was discharged also waits for answers.

Meantime, the police chief confirms GPD is also investigating a second death at GMH that occurred last month.

The top brass says police are trying to determine if the second victim died in front of the guard shack or if he was found there, treated at GMH and succumbed to his injuries.

Ignacio added based on what investigators know so far, the elderly man may have died from an illness, not injuries.
