Two lives lost in separate fatal car crashes over the weekend

Loved ones set up a roadside memorial at the site of Saturday’s car crash that claimed the life of 37-year-old Scott Anthony Cruz of Dededo.
Cruz was the passenger of a gray Sedan that Guam police say was traveling northbound on Route 1 near Fatima Road when it ran off the roadway and hit a concrete utility pole.
Guam Fire Department medics rushed Cruz and the driver to the Guam Regional Medical City, where Cruz was pronounced dead shortly after.
The driver's condition remains unknown.
Cruz was well known in the local racing community, with friends taking to social media to remember him.
His brother Mark told KUAM he was “a very special person in all our lives.”
The Guam Police Department’s Highway Patrol Division is investigating the cause of the crash along with a separate fatal car accident that happened hours prior.
GFD units responded to an overturned car on Route 15 by Nelson Ranch in Yigo late Friday night at about 11:47 p.m.
Police identified the driver as 29-year-old Keith Brian Pangelinan Mendiola Jr.
Investigators say medics from GFD extracted Mendiola from the car and performed CPR enroute to the Guam Memorial Hospital.
Mendiola was pronounced dead at the hospital at 6 a.m. on Saturday.
He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
In a release, GPD Public Information Officer Norman Analista said, “GPD remains committed to ensuring the safety of our community and will provide updates as more information becomes available.”
The police department offers its sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Cruz and Mendiola during this difficult time.
GPD said there have been seven lives lost on Guam's roads this year alone.
