The Guam Department of Education proudly announced that Dr. Andria Macaraeg is the recipient of the 2025 Adaptive Physical Education/Activity Program of the Year Award for SHAPE America, the Society of Health and Physical Education.

Recipients are celebrated for their innovative approaches, leadership, and significant impact on their communities and students' physical and mental health.

SHAPE America is a nationally recognized organization dedicated to supporting professionals and advancing best practices in the fields of health and physical education, physical activity, dance, and sport.

The award recognizes outstanding individuals that demonstrate excellence in the fields of health and physical education.

Dr. Macaraeg, a leisure education therapist for five years with the Division of Special Education, is one of two providers delivering leisure education services to eligible students with disabilities.

These services are integral in the commitment to providing specially designed instruction that enables students to engage in meaningful, enjoyable, and enriching recreational activities that contribute to their overall well-being and quality of life.

This award recognizes the outstanding work of Dr. Macaraeg and the entire Leisure Education Services team in supporting the department’s mission. The dedication, passion, and tireless efforts in promoting inclusive and impactful programs are a true reflection of the team’s commitment to excellence.

This award is not only a testament to Dr. Macaraeg’s hard work, but also highlights the impact of the collaborative efforts of our entire Special Education team in creating an inclusive educational environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive,” said Thomas Babauta, Assistant Superintendent of Special Education.

Dr. Macaraeg will be formally presented with the award in April 2025 at the SHAPE America National Convention in Baltimore, Maryland.
