The funding fiasco at the Guam Department of Education has led to their legislative oversight chair requesting to waive the standard five-day public notice requirement and to immediately declare a state of emergency at the government of Guam’s largest agency.

Sen. Vince Borja sent a letter to the legislative secretary and clerk writing about the return of critical funds intended for special education and the consolidated grant, as well as the latest communication from the U.S. Department of Education, underscores the urgent need for immediate action.

“These events raise serious concerns regarding the health, safety, and most importantly the educational well-being of our students,” said Sen. Borja. “Given the potential disruption to educational services and federal funding, it is imperative that the Legislature swiftly convene an oversight hearing.”

He announced the oversight hearing with GDOE for April 11 at 2 pm.

“This public hearing will ensure compliance with federal requirements, safeguard student health and safety, and maintain stability and continuity within our public education system,” he said.
